A first step but not sufficient
In recent years, social media has fostered unprecedented exposures to issues of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and ableism. Allyship has emerged as a response from those who wish to express their opposition to violence and oppression. Being an “ally” has meant a range of public and private behaviour: from reading and exposing oneself to new information and learning that can be transformative; to changing profile pictures on social media; to pinning a yellow square to one’s clothing.1 While becoming an ally is a good first step, allyship in itself cannot effectively change the systems that cause oppression and violence in the first place.
