Maryna fled from the war in Ukraine and came to Austria with her family. Now she is part of a new and unexpectedly growing diaspora, trying to survive in a foreign country.

The emergence of an increasingly growing Ukrainian diaspora in Austria was not expected by anyone. However, many of us fled due to the Russian invasion on 24^rd February 2022. It was the day my uncle was drafted into the army.

Already a few days before the outbreak of the war, strange things happened. It was almost impossible to withdraw cash. We were all frightened that the war would start on 23^rd February, Defender of the Fatherland Day¹, as a “present” for the Russian President Vladimir Putin. By the end of that day, this fear did not come true. But it was postponed instead.
