Especially in languages other than English, online gender-based violence on social media has become a serious challenge. This is also true for Tamil social media on which abusive users target women and transgender people.

In recent years, the rise in online gender-based violence including hate speech, stalking, harassment on social media platforms has become a serious challenge. There is an increasing trend that shows a replication of the offline behaviour and abuse against women and gender minorities on different digital platforms. Gender-based violence manifests itself in different ways on social media including targeted attacks on public figures for their political views, personal attacks on former lovers or partners who are women or transgender as well as usage of misogynistic and transphobic slurs. In India, words used to describe socio-cultural transgender identities like hijra, aravani are used as slurs in the offline world and this can also be seen on social media platforms.
